Prototype gizmo detects drug use by contact, says the article. If proven, then many historical legal barriers to widespread deployment of such tools (aka screening) fall, since police use if it would not as easily rise to a level of detention. What bars screening to enter, say, banks? Public housing? Or airlines? How is this different from the full body scanners now being used there? (“This doesn’t scan for weapons” is not the right answer. Microwave or X-ray backscatter imaging is now routinely used in public transit for far more.) What role will our CS majors play in deployment of these technologies?
