Our way of government was built on the presumption that citizens shoulddistrust government. That is what all the checks and balances are about.

Still, some officials don’t get it. And we see that play out again in Annapolis, where they fight to hide information about a fence. Read Eric Harley’s commentary of this unfolding litigation, where the city simultaneously holds that documents requested under the Public Information Act must be withheld to protect the public interest and that these documents lack any significance for the public interest. This is legal gymnastic exercise that only a lawyer could love – and we’ll soon see how much the judge laughs when he sees it.
