The breech of 1.5 million customers’ credit card information – with corresponding potential for identity theft and secondary burdens to consumers – occurred at a processor which was thought to be in compliance with industry standards. Apparently it wasn’t. PCI is the “Payment Card Industry” standard for preserving security on transactions, and apparently some companies rely on this standard alone for security – something it was not intended for.
