The US Patent Office is inviting public comment on a proposed change to the practice of publishing patents. They want to keep some of them secret if deemed to be “economically significant”. They can already keep publication limited in cases of national security matters, so this would reflect a broad expansion – and also perversion of a system that was established to manage the disclosure of ideas.
