DEA license plate scanners

The “DEA wants to scan all license plates on Utah’s ‘drug corridor’, and, as reported, wants to keep these data for years. Why do we have a sneaking feeling that this would not be limited to one highway in Utah? Apparently the ACLU has similar concerns.
