Based on a public records request, a New York newspaper has created and published a searchable web site of owners of pistol permit holders in their coverage area. New York requires a license of people who propose to possess a handgun, and those data are maintained by the government. The paper procured these data and published them, in a site that both jeopardizes gun owner safety and, some say, stigmatizes them by comparison with sexual predator databases which must be published by the government.
