Police continue use of fake cell signals to nab citizen information

A FOIA request by the ACLU resulted in discovery that police still routinely use a device called “Stingray” to capture cell phone information from subjects under surveillance – and everyone around them too.

Federal investigators in Northern California routinely used a sophisticated surveillance system to scoop up data from cellphones and other wireless devices in an effort to track criminal suspects — but failed to detail the practice to judges authorizing the probes.
